Flags, Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney, 1 - 19 November 2011

Flags continues the examination of the flag begun in the show Flag. Whether draped, folded or hanging, these emblematic pieces of cloth are in turns divisive, uniting and subject to heated debate. They provoke us to think about ideas of nationhood and tradition. These ‘soft’ flags in marble evoke the simultaneously powerful and fragile sense of monument and meaning imbued in national flags. Flags explores the symbol in many forms. Folded flags memorialise soldiers that died in Afghanistan; flags of singlets and goon sacks reference the flag as symbol of a job complete; hanging flags are adorned with slogans. Every flag has a story to tell.
