<image:caption>Flag Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane 24 May – 11 June 2011 Flags Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney 1 – 19 November 2011 The Flags Series was a body of work produced in 2011 for two solo exhibitions, Flag and Flags. As a series, these works meditate on ideas of nationhood, allegiance, citizenship, symbolism and memorial. Its centrepiece, As of today, is an ongoing body of work in which a new carved folded flag is produced for each fatality of an Australian soldier during Operation Slipper in Afghanistan.</image:caption>

The large sculptural installation referenced an event on a small Australian territory off the coast of Western Australia, the Cocos Islands. In May of 2013, 28 life jackets washed ashore, presumed to have come from an unsuccessful attempt by asylum seekers to reach Australian soil. Recreated in marble, the jackets confront the tragic reality of those seeking asylum in Australia. The work was acquired by AGSA in 2014. All photos by Mark Pokorny.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Elegy on Resistance ARTHK12, Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre 17 - 20 May 2012 Elegy on Resistance explored the individual as a figure of resistance in the modern city. Its central work, Soloist, a hooded faceless figure, was seated cross-legged like Buddha amidst four CCTV cameras (Quartet 1-4) and a series of hanging hoodies (Chorus 1-7). This lone figure stood in for the fear and misunderstanding those deemed ‘outsiders’ in society inspire. Watched suspiciously by the cameras in what could have been a clothes shop (especially given it appeared at an art fair), the hunched body is strangely meditative. It remains inscrutable in spite of our efforts to monitor and control it.</image:caption>

The series of works explored the raw material of marble itself, the act of carving as performance and its refuse. Elements of the process normally confined to the studio were brought into the gallery space. Likewise the waste and marks of process, usually hidden in the finished forms, took centre stage. <image:title>Roughing Out - The Alchemic Cycle (2013)</image:title>
<image:caption>HD video, infinitely looped. (Single loop duration 8'54") The Alchemic Cycle is a single channel infinitely looped video work. It shows the artist engaged in a Sisyphean act of breaking down a marble block, baking the powder in a kiln and slaking it in water to reform into a visually identical yet substantially changed block. It explores this perpetual process that has no beginning, middle or end.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Refoulement and Last Resort continue a body of work begun about asylum seekers with Someone died trying to have a life like mine, taking up the issue on our shores. The body of work that composes these exhibitions was shown across four galleries in 2014-15: Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney; McClelland Regional Gallery & Sculpture Park; Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; and Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery. Each of these exhibitions asked us to consider the attempts of people to reach Australia at great personal risk, and the safety and privilege in which we live our day-to-day lives. The works do not offer simple readings of the complex and problematic issue of asylum seekers. Rather inflatable life boats and palm trees embody the double standard at the heart of the issue; they are both rock solid and full of hot air. Upright life jackets stand for the individuals risking their lives at sea to reach our shores, each with their own story. A Paddle 2014 Wood and Bianco marble 100 x 18 x 4cm</image:caption>

<image:caption>This touring exhibition seeks to explore the human cost of Australia’s current policies related to asylum seekers. It throws attention to our own lives of privilege and peaceful comfort, asking us to reflect on the unseen effects of this comfortable existence. Using familiar objects such as pool toys, rubber dingys, lifejackets and paddles, Last Resort presents as unnervingly optimistic front that starts to fray upon closer inspection and consideration - this idyllic and seemingly benevolent existence has a hard and unyielding side. An immersive sound installation titled Odyessy, recreates the harrowing sounds of being caught in a heavy storm at sea. A single globe hanging in the centre of the room provides the only visual focus for the audience to gather together and listen to the tumult, taking the viewer into an unforgiving ocean, far from the pool toys and leisure aids on show outside.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Journey</image:title>
<image:caption>The Journey Galerie Paris-Beijing, Paris 10 September - 31 October 2015 The Journey is a new body of work which explores the international issue of asylum seekers. These new works seek to remind the viewer that behind this often highly politicised issue there are individual lives being risked everyday, and that at its core, seeking asylum is about the fundamental right to aspire to a better life. The Journey unpicks the universal elements of the story of aspiration employing narrative techniques. The idea of the quest or journey has long been embodied in the structure of storytelling traditions, as basic and fundamental themes that express the commonality of the human experience. At the heart of metaphor of the hero's journey are a series of trials and tribulations that must be endured to reach an end goal. This exhibition is a critical contemplation of this universal narrative, expressed in a carefully staged sequence of carved marble sculptures and installations. The Journey is Seton's first look at these issues on a universal level, and highlights the struggles which are common to all people, and all nations. All photos by Frédéric Albert.</image:caption>

<image:title>Someone Else's Problem</image:title>
<image:caption>Someone Else's Problem Installation Contemporary, Sydney Contemporary, Carriageworks 10-13 September 2015 Someone Else's Problem is a mass of seemingly discarded paddles that signify the many people currently seeking refuge from persecution or fleeing from war torn regions around the globe. The work proposes that under 'Operation Sovereign Borders' Australia renders the current international refugee crisis as 'someone else's problem'. In denying the rights of these individuals Australia ignores it's obligations to International treaties on Human Rights. The labelling of asylum seekers as illegals is not only false, but dehumanizes the issue and compounds the problem of alienation. The work seeks to remind us how lucky we few are to enjoy lives of peaceful opportunity in our home land. The paddle, a symbol of assistance, asks how we can ignore those that are asking for our help, when we have so much to share? This new work continues to develop themes presented in Seton's past exhibitions by reminding the viewer that behind this highly politicized issue there are individual lives being risked, and that seeking asylum is about the fundamental right to aspire to a better life. <image:title>Nothing's Going to Change my World</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing's Going to Change My World Spring 1883, The Hotel Windsor, Melbourne 17-23 August, 2016 'Nothing's Going to Change My World' is Alex Seton's newest body of work that uses a corrupted form of traditional memorial statuary and sculptural installation to create monuments to an uncertain future. From carved marble effigies these mixed media pieces, the works take a gentle sardonic sci-fi look at expressions of a nervous world in prognostication, proselytizing, punditry and doomsayers. Central in the the body of work is 'The Prophet'; a formal portrait bust of the helmet of a hazmat suit, and the ‘Effigy Series’ a factory produced generic marble religious statue reworked for the western religious market, deconstructed and carved by the artist to reveal its bleached and hollowed insides . This narrative driven body of work ultimately reflects upon a changing world with an optimism in the resourcefulness of human nature. <image:caption>Pygmalion 28 October - 30 November 2016 Sullivan+Strumpf, Singapore Installation view In Roman mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved. The ‘Pygmalion effect’ is the phenomenon in which higher expectations lead to an increase in performance. Its inverse is the ‘Golem effect’, by which low expectations lead to a decrease in performance. Both effects are forms of a self-fulfilling prophecy; both observable effects at play in a world divided by the privilege of circumstance. Using these themes, Seton replaces components of antique and modern bentwood chairs with his familiar medium of marble and digitally printed plastic proxies. The result is a series of hybrids in which the mass-produced melds with the hand made. ~ Chloé Wolifson Read Noelle Faulkner’s Essay Here</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alex Seton was honoured to be included in the 2016 Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Fort Kochi, India. Curator Sudarshan Shetty says of the Biennale's theme Forming in the pupil of an eye: Forming in the pupil of an eye is not an image of one reality but a reflection of multiple realities and of multiple possibilities in time. It does not question notions of reality, but instead layers many. As its own process, Forming in the pupil of an eye comes from that junction of the physiological with the conceptual. It is an acknowledgement that there is something essential in the way we look at the world, that it is multiple in nature. Forming in the pupil of an eye brings that multiplicity of experience together within the space of Kochi-Muziris Biennale and perhaps to spill over into the world at large.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Island</image:title>
<image:caption>The Island Newcastle Art Gallery 18 February - 7 May 2017 This solo exhibition contemplates and questions Australia’s role in the asylum debate. ‘The Island’ as a concept can be a safe place of refuge, isolated geographically and ideologically from the humanitarian challenges the world is currently grappling with. Alternatively it can take on a more sinister tone as a place deserted for those who have survived a perilous sea journey only to be marooned, stateless, detained, looking to the horizon for help. In Europe today, the mass movement of refugees and asylum seekers displaced by war and poverty is history repeated. Where once immigrants were embraced as a means to drive the health and economy of nations, today we turn inwards as the ideology of walls and fences become potent political capital. Seton transforms and manipulates his marble sculptures into emphatic motifs and metaphors of these current socio-political themes and narratives. Photography: Mark Pokorny</image:caption>

<image:caption>Monument Sullivan + Strumpf, Sydney 11 - 27 May 2017 While stone monuments have traditionally signified an inviolable and solemn truth rendered in an eternal medium, Alex Seton seeks to turn these conceptions on their head with a new suite of works which monumentalise the everyday and twist reality. Taking as its starting point Warhol’s declaration that all monuments glorify their maker, the exhibition MONUMENT deconstructs notions of monumentality, vanitas and memento mori via personal explorations of transience and the finite. Continuing themes that Seton has begun to explore in recent years, MONUMENT brings temporal and existential truths into question without taking itself too seriously – combining references to popular culture and personal experience with a deep knowledge of his craft and its history. <image:title>Cargo</image:title>
<image:caption>Cargo Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney 18 September - 20 October, 2018 Cargo presents a series of clothing bales, of the kind found in the second-hand industry, carved in marble and rendered alongside abstracted volumes of steel. These constrained and condensed bricks of fabric, with their interwoven and baroque folds, are arranged on six recycled nylon palettes. Each pallet is constrained to a cubic volume composed of three layers of an alternating chiral pattern, reminiscent of masonry stacking. The simple lines of the black geometric frames further articulate the block volumes, giving contrast and focus to the individual bales. Each bale speaks to the interconnectedness of our world, the complex webs of needs and concerns, war and trade that drive us. In spending many hours meticulously carving these flocked effigies, Seton slows the pace of these entwined systems, pausing to consider their momentous impact on our environment, culture, economy, and the developing nations that bear the brunt of our insatiable appetite.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once There Sullivan+Strumpf, Singapore 22 November - 22 December, 2019 In ‘Once There’, Alex Seton plays with, inverts and exaggerates the techniques and language of classical statuary and monument to create works that reflect on the contemporary world. The exhibition comprises a series of studio dust cloths rendered in marble, which upend the image of the shrouded figure that traditionally denotes grand metaphorical concepts such as purity, death, glory and the afterlife. Bundled and thrown on the ground, not covering nor ‘containing’ any object underneath, here the veil itself becomes the subject. The everyday masses of fabric are infused with rich heritage but invite a simpler contemplation of human impact, production and our ever-expanding relationship with the material world.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Great Escape - The Great Escape</image:title>
<image:caption>Goulburn Regional Art Gallery 7 February — 4 April, 2020 Alex Seton’s sculptural practice resonates a profound dedication to the physical and conceptual agency of marble – his works exhibited internationally and throughout Australia. An exhibition of new work ‘The Great Escape’ uses the landscape and the material of the Wombeyan Caves and quarry as its central tenet. In a part comic-tragic tribute to the home of the material that sparked a lifetime’s fascination with marble carving and sculpture, Seton lays out recreations of places and moments from his obscure childhood memories. With an inquisitive and critical approach to his medium, its history and tradition at large, this show marks the first major solo showing of Seton’s work in Goulburn, close to his childhood home of Taralga. ‘Anything Will Bounce If You Throw It Hard Enough’ (2020). Wombeyan Marble, Marulan Onyx, 45 x 176 x 132cm and 45 x 96 x 76cm. ‘The Track’ (2020). Calcium Oxide (Quicklime) tiles, stainless steel, 10 x 720 x 120cm. Photo: Mark Pokorny.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meet Me Under the Dome - Meet Me Under the Dome</image:title>
<image:caption>26 November - 23 December Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney Taking its name from a famous etching of Sydney’s Garden Palace destroyed by fire in September 1882, the show recalls a former common meeting place that no longer exists. At the centre of the exhibition is The Ghost of Wombeyan, a carving of a life-sized shrouded figure in repose and swathed in cloth. Created from marble from Wombeyan Caves, where the artist grew up, the figure lies in requiem to the landscape and its stories. Upstairs, smaller works carved from Wombeyan marble record impressions of Seton’s early recollections: a favourite toy, Bun Bun the rabbit; four pillows in a row, for four sleeping brothers; The Sawdust Short Drop Throne, a wry throwback to the sawdust toilet used as a child; and Dad, I dug a hole!, a collection of mattocks used for tilling and shaping the earth, and planting trees. Accompanying Seton’s sculptures, a series of photographs of the quarry capture how, like memory, the landscape has been altered and reconstituted over time. The title of each work is replete with loss, such as The Vanishing and A History of Forgetting.</image:caption>

Using memories of unreliable family lore as a starting point, Alex displays a combination of video, photography and carved marble sculptures to poetically and humorously reflect upon the fragility of memory as well as the dangers and distortions of reconstructing it. Extrapolating from there, Alex asks how does this effect come to bear after years of exposure to an endless stream of digital content, memes and misinformation? <image:caption>11 February - 17 April 2022 Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre A History of Forgetting continues Alex Seton’s interrogation of the unreliability of memory, both personal and collective. For the artist, growing up in Australia is to be aware of the blank pages in our history books. Centred on the idiosyncratic memories of his own childhood growing up in rural NSW, the show is a deeply personal elegy to the place of his upbringing that grapples with the passing of time and the importance of bringing our stories to the fore. Incorporating photography, video work and new marble carvings alongside an original musical work, the solo exhibition captures Seton’s deep love of his childhood landscape and presents poignant and often humorous reflections on the fallibility of memory. <image:title>Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt 2022 - EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL, AND NOTHING HURT</image:title>
<image:caption>3rd December 2022 - 5th December 2023 The Lock Up, Newcastle In Everything was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt, Alex Seton creates a series of glass installations that contemplate memory, forgetting, and loss with the passing of time. Created specially for the cells of The Lock-Up, Seton presents a series of chandeliers in tribute to those made by Newcastle’s discontinued Leonora Glassworks. Each piece riffs upon chandeliers that were ubiquitous in the entranceways of clubs and RSLs of post- World War II Australia. The title of the show refers to Kurt Vonnegut’s singular anti-war novel about the fire bombing of Dresden that dislocates linear time. The founders of the Leonora glassworks started out making aircraft bomb-sights, but flourished when they moved into art glass. This exhibition also reflects what writer Mark Twain observed about Australian history, “it does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies”. There is a tragedy to a country that struggles with the more violent aspects of its history when they are annealed into every moment, both light and dark.
